Spring Social & Psychedelic Sardines!!

Coming up with fresh and new ideas for the school's Spring Social every year is very hard and of course my mind only works well under a major time crunch!! Nothing like the last minute but seriously my best ideas hit me when time is up! Bayou academy's Spring Social is our biggest fundraiser of the year where items are donated and auctioned off at a big dinner festival. Each class contributes creative items they design and put together. Of course since I am the "artist mom" my kids' teachers generously put this in my hands!ha Sooooo this year with Riley's classmates I stamped their hands into peace sign shapes (Warhol style) and they loved it and it sold for $250!

However, it was my last minute creation with Park's kindergarten class that I really loved!!! I painted a can of 15 sardines with the can rolled back which I called "Psychedelic Sardines" then printed each ones fingerprints as scales on them..people that didn't even have kids in that class were bidding on it and finally after the bidding war between two of my dear friends it sold for $1000 at the auction! Mrs. Kim was so very proud her class brought that much to the auction.

I also donated a piece I painted one called "Ditch Bank Roots" it represented those Delta fields we see many fall days here in Mississippi with farm land at the bank of the ditch. I dripped the paint underneath rows to represent the roots of the land.

Ok so after being featured in The Bolivar Commercial (local paper in Cleveland) it has been crazy busy but extremely exciting! Aimee Robinette wrote an amazing article about the six pack idea and it was picked up by numerous surrounding papers. After which I have had many phone calls for orders and even wholesale orders for stores. FUN!!FUN!! SO.....my older brother kindly started me a website where all my items can be purchased online...check it out here http://www.deltasixpack.com/ (you can also read the article at the website). I also was contacted by Delta State alumni association to be featured in their handout next month so be on the lookout for that as well.

"The Delta"...There's No Place Like Home!!!

No matter where you go or what you do...if you are from the Delta, there are only two ways your future can go down...you never leave it or it never leaves you! While you are here you are sort of bugged by it and when you leave (although you may be glad) there is nothing like the down home feeling when you come back to visit! It's just different from all the hustle and bustle and it is extremely unique. This painting really was inspired by that feeling. The piece is actually really huge and very heavy to say the least. It is completely built out of some old plywood from my storage room including the frame. The 61 highway sign is even built up out of some masonite and collaged with an old Mississippi map. Around the edge of the guitar are the lyrics "Black Water" by the Doobie Brothers (which are perfect if you ever remember growing up "ridin' around in the country"). All these features fused together is what makes this piece so rustic and "Delta". I sold it this past Christmas to a lady who gave it to her son-in-law who is not even from here...but just like everyone else ... he loves it when he visits!!! What a fun gift!!!

Just this past September I created my own business and went full force into the painting/design field. I have always gotten a few commissions before Christmas but this past year I finally got brave enough to swim in the deep end! ha and hey..it's not too bad!

I have been working as an artist for the past ten years going through every stage in most painters lives from Georgia O'Keefe big flower stage to the Van Gogh/Picasso funky tree abstract phase. As artists you always dream of coming up with something all your own everyone loves and compliments but it is so difficult! Finally, on my own with no inspiration, no previous artist input, etc..just me myself and I created the six pack idea and I have to say I am so excited even though it is not my typical style or something serious like I had dreamt of .....this works for me!! I worked my poor little painter hands to the bone this Christmas and even when it was 1 a.m. and I knew I was tired I pushed through and made it!

This year just reminded me to HAVE FAITH & PATIENCE... there are great things to come for everyone!

Well with school starting, golf tournaments, and baseball ending I have been CRAZY busy with no time for art! But not too busy to go triple OCD over details..especially cupcakes... for my youngest son's Birthday Party!

This was the only way I could get in my creative art fix for the last couple of weeks. My friend Laura Lee and I always do the double birthday party because our sons are best friends and 5 days apart. We went for the "Circus" theme this year and we went psycho with it! ha...BUT it was so much fun and all the kids had a blast!! Check out my popcorn cupcakes....I cut mini marshmallows into threes and put one on top to look like a popped piece of corn then sprayed them with yellow sugar spray. Funny how even the ooh's and aah's of a FAB cupcake can make ya feel good, worked just like I had painted a fantastic piece of art!

The birthday boys! We even got a friend that drives an ice cream truck to pull up and let the kids go pick out whatever they wanted! They thought that was "cool"!!

I Love Collage Art

Collage art always tells a story...I love it! It may look like a jumbled mess or easy paper glued to a board but any true artist has a reason for each pieces' placement and a feeling behind it. In order to make your work flow and feel right each piece or color should compliment each other....which is true in any art media. Sometimes at school when I am helping a student with a collage piece, I will suggest a really weird or outside of the box idea like burning the side of the paper or cutting words out of magazines for street lines. They are unsure to trust me at first they say "I don't want to burn this drawing I have worked so hard on!"....ha... but this year one student (Sara Beth Little) trusted me full on and did an awesome collage of an old hotel in downtown Cleveland...we raised the watercolor pieces with foam so it would be a little 3D and added ink and cut out words from a Delta magazine. She won 1st place in her grade category and 2nd place overall at the Crosstie Arts Festival. She was very excited and I was so proud of her and her hard work!

About three summers ago I had to get some teaching hours in so I signed up for a watercolor class under Joe Abide at the local college, Delta State. It was a very interesting class and I was excited to go everyday however, I am so not a watercolorists! I am glad to have learned in depth the different watercolor techniques but I just do not have the patience for it. I did this watercolor of a glass pitcher which I think turned out pretty neat, given I just started watercoloring two weeks prior. Patience....something I work for everyday! I think that is why God led me to teaching...I am tested on it everyday and I get better every year....of course my high school students would disagree! Now if I could just get my husband signed up to teach ... maybe he could learn some patience!!!! Ha!

My Two Perfect Pieces of Art!

Sorry I haven't posted in a while, I have been at the beach in Destin with the only two perfect pieces of art I have ever made...Riley and Park. They had a complete blast and we all got much needed relaxation and inspiration! But now we are home and back to work. I have orders to fill already so I will be posting more soon. One more thing I have to share!!!...This is a picture from Park's play at the end of school....Only mom's can enjoy this.... At the beginning of the play Park("Georgie Porgie."..which he really was named that because he kisses all the girls!) and this little girl walk out and he is suppose to say "Stand for the pledge"...but instead he looks and me and says "Hey Mama!"..Everyone laughed but I of course ate it up!! That was the best part of the whole thing! He confirmed his "mama's boy" status!!!

Saturday morning started bright and early this past weekend! Heather Short and I set up at the B.B. King Museum in Indianola, MS to sell some artwork. We had to get there extremely early and set up because Heather puts Martha Stewart to shame in organization skills! ha...If anyone out there knows me in the least knows I am the exact opposite. HOWEVER, I so needed her that day to get me all organized, set up, and ready to sell! She is also the best cheerleader when customers are around. She was selling and pitching my pieces to people before her own. I told her she was going to have to get a commission cut! She is the best and we had a great time selling and chatting it up with the Indianola crew! They really loved the "Nola Six Packs"...I ended up selling 2 there and had 2 more orders. I am hoping to get T- shirts printed this week with the "Delta Six Pack"! Let me know if you are interested. I honestly have been working like a MAD woman lately! I have had three big commission pieces, 2 T-shirt designs, my 4 yr old's class play, my 8 yr old's field trip and many nightly baseball games, class day preparation, graduation preparation...all the while teaching my classes and grading artwork!!! AND a broken air conditioner to boot!! oh and one more thing....Woke up this morning both boys were sick with the "Delta Crud" cough! HOWEVER, I have weathered the storm...all my art pieces are finished and will be picked up today, tonight is graduation, both boys got shots and medicine (nothing the daddy can't take care of) while I am off to a well deserved girl trip Saturday morning and need I say I can't wait!! It's crazy where an artist can gain inspiration...really! I even remember after months of yacking while pregnant with my second child thinking hmmmm...that could be an interesting painting...as I flushed away my daily orange Popsicle! (I know gross right but all mom's out there understand after 6 months it's no big deal) My kids at school always think inspiration has to be in a book or they think they can look around the room and it will just automatically "pop" into their heads. My recent inspiration is a combination of enormous daily caffeine intake and looking through old pictures of paintings I have done through the years. I have been painting cotton and delta landscapes for years now and after our master bedroom renovation I wanted something really graphic but with basic colors all the while representing that "Delta" thang, ya know?

I haven't posted in a while due to the Annual Crosstie Arts Festival preparations! Every April in downtown Cleveland, Crosstie Arts Council hosts a festival full of local artist works and much entertainment. It all started with Friday night's Patron's party held at Amanda and Jed Turner's House. The party showcased all the past Crosstie "Best in Show" Pieces and also held a silent auction with patron's for the next day's work. Then finally ....Yesterday was the BIG DAY and we outlasted the rain! It ended up being beautiful and we sold some awesome pieces! My fellow art teacher and friend Katie Byrd shared the booth with me right in front of the courthouse. We kind of "fancied up" our booth with a rug, table, and tent and we got tons of compliments saying ours looked actually like an art shop! We even made the front page of the Cleveland Current the next morning! We are absolutely worn out now and will start getting ready for the next Crosstie year! Ever since our rush of cold weather, I have been painting everything blue and green! I mean it's April and 45 degrees outside??? This is just not painting weather! Anyway .... I have recently been CRAZY busy decorating for Jr Sr Prom which was this past Friday night and then Saturday was our school's Spring Social where many donated items were auctioned off...including my classes art work. Now that I am done with all that I can focus on Crosstie. Crosstie is a local Art Festival and 5k Run that is held yearly on the Courthouse lawn. I just hope the weather brightens up otherwise all my paintings will be "blue"!

"Days at the Lake"

This past Thursday I got to deliver my three commissioned pieces to the Kelly's in Memphis, TN. Let me tell you, it was the most exciting delivery I have every made in my commissioned art career. As I backed in the driveway the newly married couple met me outside at the door awaiting their pieces. I got out and opened the back and they were like two kids on Christmas morning! Their faces just lit up... and while carrying in each painting they were so giddy! I absolutely was inspired to go do more artwork just to get another reaction like that one. It was a pleasure working with such a cute and nice couple! As a thank you surprise, I had one of my old students, who is now in the 12th grade draw a charcoal picture of Hallie and her beloved father who past away a few years ago. When she saw it she immediately poured on the tears! She was so extremely grateful and I think she really loved it. Gosh, that really was the best art experience I have had so far. A great end to this busy Spring Break!!

I tried my hand a while back at Folk Art. I am a huge fan of it however, just not extremely great at it yet. This piece is two pieces of plywood in different sizes layered together. There are many different paint colors underneath the black so when sanded and roughed up they peek through the edges and add to it's rustic charm. I hope to do many other pieces that kind of go around this "theme and look" for the Crosstie Arts Festival coming up in April. It's going to be Fab Folk Art! I hope!!! :D

Fabulous Field Trip!

My art class took a field trip to Mrs. Lena Gene Waldrup's studio where she demonstrated how to make marbled paper and silks. I was in complete amazement! I have never seen this process and it was so FABULOUS. You drop colors from a medicine dropper into a solution...lay the paper on top and pull it up...then dip in another solution and VOILA! This is just one example above..Aren't they beautiful!!!? I think this will be my next inspiration for a painting or maybe even collage! Ok so I am always busy painting things for other people and I never have time to do anything for myself! Soooo..for the miniature show this year I have decided to do something selfish and theme my colors and frames around our bedroom we just recently renovated. Just in case they don't sell, I can put them in my new room. They all will be very basic bits of nature, abstract but with great texture. The frame is oyster white with rubbed brown accented areas. If I do happen to sell them then GREAT..I am always changing my mind on what I like anyway!Ha!

I am "semi" working on items for the miniature show that will be hosted at The Warehouse in Cleveland. Every piece of art has to be under 12" X 12" but can be framed bigger. The painting above was one I had in the show last year .... I like to do all mine with the same theme and because they are so small a group of two or three could look great together! I was thrilled to have all pieces sell last year, hopefully the same will happen this time!

This is my latest creation! Another garden menagerie of colors... I love to do these all different ways! I think all the colors at the bottom add so much interest to flowers that could be so typical. This one is 16 X 20 framed and was donated to my sister in law who is in charge of the Red Cross Heart Ball in Oxford, MS this Friday night. Glad I could help and I hope it brings in good $$$$!!

I just finished these paintings this week for Susan Allen of Indianola! She ordered these for her sisters' 50th Birthday. They are painted on wood panels in acrylics then sealed. I love painting on wood... even old crusty wood sometimes...it makes the painting seem even more interesting! My sweet hubby delivered these to her and today she called and said they turned out great and her sis couldn't wait to hang them in her pool house. AND she ordered more as future gifts!

I painted these for my friend Laura Lee Connell. She wanted something with land because her husband is a farmer. She ended up finding the wooden background pieces at a frame shop and mounted the art on top. I think it makes these pieces even better!

BREAKFAST WITH SANTA!!!!Saturday morning is the Big Day!!! We have been working all year getting ready with trees and decor and in the morning we can finally enjoy!
Breakfast starts at 7:30 the kids will enjoy music from the "Bayou Blues" Music Club from school and make out their list to Santa, as well as have their picture taken with the jolly ole elf himself!

Here are some pics of the trees we have been auctioning off for the last month....different themes from Ole Miss, State, cooking, hunting, to princess, social butterfly and candylicious.
We also have wreaths and Christmas paintings from my jr high and high school art classes.

High School Artwork!!

I was so impressed with my art students when I assigned this project. They were to make a parody of "American Gothic" by Grant Wood. They exceeded my expectations!!! These are beginning art students....aren't they great?!! (Students work in order shown top : Gib Ellis, and Emily Holecek, and bottom Caleb Reed, and Spence Abraham)

Whimsical Kid Art!!

I usually do this style for special events or Holidays!

This is a sculptey clay project I did with the 3 yr old Kindergarten class at Bayou Academy. I traced each of their hands on the flattened clay...which comes in all different bright colors.....and carved their name in the edge with a nail. I then curled some of the fingers up and down and popped the hands in the oven according to directions. I then got 4 different pieces of old boards and layered 2 on top of each other so the hands would kind of curl and layer over it and painted them black so the bright hands would pop off!

These Hands were a big hit at our Spring Social which is a fundraiser for the school. In the live auction they went for $350 each! I was shocked.
I would be glad to do this with your kids hands and maybe put a quote or saying around it...great Christmas gift too for Grandparents! Just send me a tracing of your children's hands and I will do the rest. Price $45

The painting at the top is called "Whimsy Blossoms".It is an 11 X 14 canvas painting with layers of square paper under the acrylic paint. It would be perfect for any kid's room or even into the teenage years! All my older kids at school love this one!! Price $55

The Art Sale /Holiday shop at Heather's went great! We had tons of delta shoppers out on the very cold Cleveland day and had tons of sales! We were very happy to see everyone come by and look around.

I hated to see the "Church" go but Molly Smith bought it so I know it's going to a great arty home! and Michelle Bailey bought "The Delta Mud" pic (above right) I was happy to see her get that as well.

This was my very first big painting! In 1998, I was getting my design degree with a minor in ceramics. After Sammy Britt's painting class, I discovered my desire to paint, dropped out of ceramics and have been throwing paint around ever since! We had to build these canvases ourselves in class and paint something with a theme. At the time, I thought this painting was horrible because it was so loose with abstract strokes...now I wish I could get that back...I try to get each brush so perfect.ugh..this is the ONLY thing I am O.C.D. about!
